I have a content item that I want to do different things with depending on if I am in organize mode or not.

Is there a way to tell? IsInEditMode?

You can use this:

using N2.Web.UI.WebControls;

if(ControlPanel.GetState() == ControlPanelState.DragDrop)

I'm using the code from your template site.

        <n2:SlidingCurtain ID="sc" runat="server">
            <n2:DragDropControlPanel ID="cp" runat="server">
                <VisibleFooterTemplate>

                    <script type="text/javascript">
                    if(window.top != window && window.top.n2){
                        window.top.n2.select("Go");
                    }
                    </script>

                </VisibleFooterTemplate>
            </n2:DragDropControlPanel>
        </n2:SlidingCurtain>

There is no GetState() for DradDropControlPanel

How do I get state?

It's a static method. Just write N2.Web.UI.WebControls.ControlPanel.GetState()
